“Freedom is coming tomorrow”: Nkosi sikelel' Afrika - Sarafina
With this painting within a painting, Fetsum depicts Kaepernick who will forever be known for a simple, silent gesture. He is the quarterback who knelt for the national anthem before National Football League games in 2016 as a protest against social injustice, especially the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of police. For us, Kaepernick illustrates the hard work worldwide that remains to be done, and the readiness to do it. For others, these are symbols of what they want a reprieve from having to face. And there we have it: the devotion to the symbols of patriotism can be strangely at odds with the very actions of true patriots.
Through our actions, we All pledge allegiance to the principles of justice, equality, and freedom, while also promising to tell the truth whenever those principles are betrayed. With this Fetsum wants the viewer to see the light in all of us especially so, for most people of color living in Edmonton, and through the light, we will all have clarity. When we take time to reflect on the inside, then the vision is much clearer.
This Painting in painting is definitely a show stopper, you have to look at it a few times to see the depth and emotions woven into it. This is a museum quality painting
